engagement pictures

We have decided that we are going to take 2 sets of engagement pictures. One traditional session will be in the Fall when the colors are changing, and the other session will be at the beach on Hilton Head Island when we go on vacation in August. I have always wanted my engagement pictures to be at the beach. I probably wouldn't even do the other set, but they are free with our wedding pictures. Well, anyway, I have the dilemma of deciding what we will wear in the beach pictures. The photographer told me to wear something simple and solid colors so that our clothes do not distract from us or from the background. I totally agree with this. Most beach pictures I have ever seen show the people wearing a combination of white and khaki, or jeans. I really do like this, but I also really like the rare pictures when the people are wearing black, or even bright colors. Well, once again, I am coming to all of you for advice. I got such amazing responses on my post about wedding shoes (really, thank you so much to everyone for your input!) that I am requesting your input about beach pictures and what you have seen (or done) in beach portraits that you really think worked well. I am going for a very casual, beachy, relaxed, flip-flop wearing vibe. I really want to wear a beachy dress, and I see Ryan in some relaxed khaki shorts with some kind of shirt. So far, I have only pursued the white/khaki/light blue scheme. Here is an inspiration board to give you an idea of what I'm envisioning:

So, what do you think? Should we stick with the traditional white theme, or go with something dark or bright as a contrast to the beach?

We just had our beach engagement photos taken at Hilton Head (Sea Pines). The photographer suggested white shirts and khakis, which we did since we were also taking a larger family photo. I love the idea of a pastel color keeping it light, but fresh. Perhaps the white dress would be light and match well with your fiance's attire (white polo and khakis). The photographer said skirts and dresses make the shots a little limiting. I wore a skirt and didn't find it too difficult, but something to keep in mind. Good luck!

I'm doing two engagement sessions as well! And one of them is also on the beach. I did try and find some white clothes, and I found a dress that I thought would work that was all white, but it didn't and so now I am wearing a white dress with really bright splashes of color. I think it's still going to look beachy but it will really pop against the expansive background.

I do also like when people go for the linen, all-natural look. I have never heard that you should stay away from skirts. It seems like most of the engagement shoots I have seen on the beach have brides wearing skirts....

when i got my engagement pictures taken, my photographer told me not to wear white, but we weren't at the beach so i'm not sure that makes a difference? I wore white pants with a pink Ann Taylor Loft shirt - it was a cute contrast and the fiance wore jeans and nice button down shirt.

I think a white dress would be super pretty, or anything aqua colored would also look nice.

I really like the idea of the white sun dress. And just to sound like a total nerd...it is kind of foreshadowing what's to come...another white dress at the wedding. I think barefoot might be cute too, and your guy could wear linen shorts or seersucker! Have fun!

We are taking our engagement pictures in Septemeber. Can you tell me what program or how you made your inspiration board?

I wore a white skirt and the hubby wore white linen pants. Also we wore our wedding colors in our shirts, mine navy and his green. I like your inspiration board, stick with something classic that you love!!!

Thanks for the tip for the inspiration board. I will try it this evening. I think that your pictures will be fine in a great white dress. I do not what I am going to wear for our pictures. We are more of a jeans and khaki couple. I am still trying to figure out some of our locations. I think that one of them is going to be at The Ohio State University since we were both attending there when we met. Maybe in front of the stadium. I have seen some great pictures taken there.

I like the white also. I think as long as you stick with light colors you can't go wrong.
