It's Derby Day, and for those of us in the Bluegrass, today is one of the most important days of the year! If you ever have the chance to attend the Derby, I highly recommend it. The grandeur of the grandstand is amazing, and the spectacle/craziness of the infield is also a lot of fun. I don't think there is better people-watching anywhere in the world than at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. In honor of the Derby, I thought I would supply a Mint Julep recipe for anyone who wants to share in the Derby fun from home. Here goes:
Ingredients (for a large batch):
Make a simple syrup by boiling sugar and water together for five minutes. Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight. (The overnight part is not necessary, it just tastes better). Make one julep at a time by filling a julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces of Kentucky Whisky. Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
If you don't want to do all of that, Early Times & Maker's Mark both make great pre-made Mint Juleps that you just pour over ice, add a mint sprig and drink. I hope that everyone has a great Derby Day! Enjoy!
